How to start a cosmetic business

Advice on starting out:

The Inky List

Get as much support as you can – learn from others mistakes, and get a seasoned mentor if possible, and get a strong network around you. Being two co-founders definitely helped us to get through the tough times! In terms of creating a brand…be super clear on WHY you exist, what makes you different, and make sure that is more than the product itself. Have strong core beliefs and carry them through everything you do.

HUDA Beauty

‘Loving what you do is the key ingredient, so start with these basic questions: Why do I want to start a business? Do I like the industry enough to be living and breathing it 24/7? Do I have enough passion for beauty to follow it through? Personally, I’ve always given people make-up advice and talked about beauty products because that’s what I’m passionate about. I can’t promote makeup on Instagram if I don’t believe in the product. If I’m asking people to spend money on Huda Beauty products, I have to genuinely believe we have created the best.’- Huda Kattan

How successful cosmetic businesses started:

Pixi

Pixi was created over 20 years ago and launched from a flagship boutique in Soho, London. Creator, Petra Strand has 20+ years of experience as a makeup artist & product developer. Passionate about skincare, Petra creates innovative formulations that are infused with botanicals and beneficial ingredients. Petra has real-world experience as a busy working mother of four, therefore Pixi is truly about multitasking, flaw-fixing, youth-enhancing products for when you're on-the-go with no time to spare.

Pixi's mission: simply to bring out the natural beauty in everyone - to look like you, your best you.

Tromborg

Tromborg is a Danish family-owned business and was founded in 2003 by Marianne Tromborg, being a coveted makeup artist before starting the company. She has shaped Tromborg based on her own personal and professional approach to beauty. This approach centers around the use of natural therapeutic remedies which are of course all organic – but it’s also about offering products that are easy to use for everyone, especially those with busy schedules, while leaving no doubt about the quality.

Marianne’s husband, biochemist Tim Schyberg, has used his many years of scientific experience from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry – including research and knowledge about skincare – to develop the perfect combination of innovative, active ingredients necessary for a modern, natural and effective product line.
